The Significance of the A-league Gala
Every year we spend a great deal of time and energy preparing for the A-league gala and often people ask why this particular sporting event gets such a lot of attention. One of the most important reasons is that this gala isn’t only about swimming. It is about unity, spirit, support, loyalty and commitment. It is the first major school sports event of the year and its success sets the tone for much of what follows for the rest of the year. The Student Exec select the theme and create promotional materials – including an inspiring and powerful video which was screened this year – and develop ways to build participation and spirit. Amusing moves, catchy warcries, healthy rivalry and infectious energy dominate assemblies as students become part of a greater activity – that of building Crawford Sandton into a formidable, impressive and coherent team that enjoys the exhilaration and passion which is tangible at the gala. Unlike other age-specific sports and teams, swimming engages students from every grade and both genders so that everyone has a reason to invest in the success of this event.
While the exceptional achievement of winning the gala (and spirit trophy) is incredibly exciting and memorable, it is the deep sense of pride and belonging, the innate understanding of what Crawford Sandton stands for, and the intense pride evident across the school that makes this such a special and significant memory.
